What is paediatric occupational therapy?

Paediatric occupational therapy is part of the allied health field. The aim of occupational therapy is to help your child overcome developmental, sensory, motor, emotional and social challenges so that they can participate fully in the everyday tasks that they need and want to do. Some examples of these tasks include getting dressed, eating/meal times, playing, connecting with loved ones, socialising with peers, participating in daycare/preschool/school, and accessing their community.

Does my child need a formal diagnosis to attend occupational therapy?

No, occupational therapy is not dependent on a formal diagnosis. Occupational therapy is helpful for any child who is experiencing challenges that affect their ability to engage in everyday activities.

Do parents/caregivers need to attend therapy sessions?

Yes, our services incorporate the education and involvement of the child's family, as we acknowledge the substantial role of family support in attaining goals and furthering development. Therefore, At CKOT we require at least one caregiver to be present for each session that the child attends. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to participate as fully as possible in the goal setting and therapy sessions for their child. Parents/caregivers are also encouraged to attend regular meetings with the occupational therapist, without their child present, to discuss progress, update on areas of concern or difficulty, provide feedback, and review goals.

Do I need a referral?
